Key take away

It is well reported that NSAIDS before the implant surgery reduced the post-operative pain. Dexketoprofen trometamol (DKT) reported to be a quick acting analgesic for the treatment of painful musculoskeletal conditions. But none of the studies has been conducted to evaluate the efficacy of DKT for post-operative pain. The result of the present study revealed that administration of 25 mg of DKT 15 minutes before implant surgery could reduce the severity of immediate postoperative pain.

Background

One the major fear among the patients who are going through dental implants is the postoperative pain.

Method

To decrease this factor, one hundred patients who needed single-implant treatments were received either 25 mg dexketoprofen trometamol (DKT) or 500 mg of vitamin C as placebo orally 15 minutes before the implant surgery. The assessment of pain was done by a subjective visual analogue scale of 100 mm. A 5-point Likert scale used to measure inflammation and estimate complications. A Mann-Whitney U-test, ANOVA, and T-tests were also performed.

Result

A total of 83 out of 100 patients completed the analysis. Lower pain intensity was described throughout the immediate postoperative phase by the DKT group. The inflammation response was also lower among the patients of DKT group at 48h. However, the bleeding was more significant in the patients received DKT. Both groups exhibited no other complications.

Conclusion

The oral 25 mg soluble DKT 15 minutes before implant surgery can decrease the severity of immediate postoperative pain.
