A recent study published in 2017, in Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research has stated that Ketofol can be considered as a safe and effective drug in reducing pain and complications among pregnant women after cesarean delivery.

Every pregnant woman wants short labor and delivery without any complications. Some babies can't be delivered via normal delivery, in that case, cesarean or C-section is needed. C-section is more complicated than the normal delivery, and this further may interfere with breastfeeding as well. Therefore, a cesarean is followed by spinal anesthesia. Ketofol is one of the effective anesthesia that can significantly reduce the pain and complications after cesarean.

A randomized, double-blind clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of ketofol on pain and complication after cesarean delivery under spinal anesthesia.

The study included 92 pregnant women selected for cesarean delivery under spinal anesthesia. These patients were divided in four groups, propofol (0.25 mg/kg), ketamine (0.25 mg/kg), ketofol (25 mg ketamine plus 25 mg propofol) and placebo (saline). These medications were administered intravenously (IV) instantly after umbilical cord clamping. The intensity of pain is determined by using Visual Analog Scale (VAS). The complications raised after cesarean and onset of breastfeeding were also evaluated. The complications involved in the evaluation were nausea, vomiting, and shivering.

After evaluation, it was found that the mean score of pain, onset of breastfeeding and morphine consumption was significantly lower in the ketofol group as compared to other groups at certain intervals. Further, the complications were also found to be lower in the ketofol group as compared to other groups.

Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of ketofol can be considered as a safe and significantly an effective drug in reducing pain and complications among pregnant women after cesarean delivery.
