The malunited medial impacted ankle fractures with varus ankle deformity can be effectively treated using supramalleolar osteotomy when combined with an intra-articular osteotomy, an analysis of a retrospective study published in the Journal, Foot & Ankle International.

The patients who were reported to have medial impacted ankle fracture from January 2011 and December 2014 were selected. These patients were classified into four classes; type A fractures, type B fractures with the AO classification, 44A2 and 44B3 and went through the operation. The pain, clinical and radiographic outcomes were assessed using visual analog scale (VAS), the Olerud and Molander Scale, and the modified Takakura classification stage, respectively.

After the treatment, the tibial ankle surface (TAS) angle and talar tilt angle (TTA), the radiographic variables showed a significant difference from the baseline. However, no difference was noticed within the mean tibial lateral surface (TLS). The average Olerud and Molander Scale score and VAS also showed an improvement from the baseline. On the other hand, the modified Takakura classification stage reflected no difference from the baseline.

All the above-evaluated results indicated the considerable importance of supramalleolar osteotomy combined with an intra-articular osteotomy.
