Can menstrual issues affect adolescent sleep quality?

What's new?

Adolescents experiencing dysmenorrhea and premenstrual syndrome may have compromised sleep quality, suggesting that healthcare providers should recognize these menstrual challenges and offer appropriate interventions.

An observational study published in the “Journal of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology”

aimed to determine the effect of menstrual disorders on sleep quality in adolescents aged 12-18.

Researchers conducted a survey among adolescent medicine clinic visitors, structured in four sections:

  1. Anthropometric measurements and medical history
  2. Menstruation and symptom history
  3. Sleep Quality Scale and Sleep Variable Questionnaire (SQS-SVQ)
  4. Premenstrual Syndrome Assessment Scale (PMSAS)

It was observed that adolescents with high PMSAS scores reported substantially lower SQS scores. Those with dysmenorrhea experienced worse sleep quality, efficiency and SQS scores. No pivotal difference was found in sleep quality for those suffering from heavy menstrual bleeding (lasting over 7 days, needing more than 5-6 pads/tampons daily, and affecting sleep efficiency/quality). It was concluded that dysmenorrhea and PMS adversely impair sleep quality in adolescents. Therefore, healthcare providers should recognize these menstrual challenges and offer appropriate interventions.
