Administering inhaled Budesonide with intravenous Dexamethasone before thyroidectomy mitigates postoperative airway inflammation and reduce coughing.
A combination of inhaled Budesonide used preoperatively along with Dexamethasone intravenous (IV) has proven to reduce postoperative sore throat severity in thyroidectomy patients, as per a study issued in the ‘Medicine’ journal.
Ping-Ping Chen led a randomized trial that evaluated the efficacy of inhaled Budesonide and Dexamethasone IV when used preoperatively to relieve postoperative sore throat (POST) after the surgery for the removal of the thyroid gland.
A total of 97 patients were randomly assigned to two groups: Group A (48 patients) received 0.1 mg/kg Dexamethasone IV mixed with 5 ml of normal saline before anesthetic induction. Group B (49 patients) received the same, plus Budesonide aerosol inhalation.
Group B showed a significantly lower incidence and severity of POST at 6, 12, and 24 hours during swallowing compared to Group A. However, the hoarseness incidence and severity were similar between groups at all-time points.
Furthermore, Budesonide with Dexamethasone also lowered the episodes of postoperative coughing at 24 hours.
