Key take away

Effervescent granules containing sodium bicarbonate, metoclopramide, and dimethicone are beneficial for rapid, complete, and durable symptomatic relief of digestive symptoms likely due to functional dyspepsia.

Background

A study was performed to determine the advantages and consumer experience with effervescent granules for symptomatic management of digestive disorders suggestive of functional dyspepsia under real-life situations.

Method

In this real-world evidence study, adults (age 35-65 years) with symptoms indicative of indigestion/ functional dyspepsia at least once a month and who had used effervescent granules within the previous six months finished an online questionnaire that elicited information on symptom mitigation and quality of life.

Result

The effervescent granules expedited onset of symptom alleviation. About 21% of respondents perceived an effect within ten minutes while 88% reported an improvement in overall symptoms within thirty minutes. In this retrospective observational study, a similarly prompt onset of complete resolution of gastric pain/cramps, bothersome fullness symptoms, nausea, acidity, and bloating were noted by 65%-83% of respondents.

Notably, 50%-59% of respondents were found to be free from digestive symptoms for greater than three hours or until the next meal. The majority of the volunteers (92%) reported an enhancement in quality of life when taking effervescent granules for the treatment of hyperacidity symptoms. About 95% of respondents were satisfied with effervescent granules' efficacy on overall symptom alleviation.

Conclusion

In people with digestive disorders due to functional dyspepsia, the effervescent granules (active ingredients: sodium bicarbonate, metoclopramide, dimethicone) were linked with prompt relief of symptoms of gastric pain/cramps, bothersome fullness, acidity, nausea, and bloating.
