Key take away

Omeprazole provides rapid alleviation of symptoms (chest discomfort, acid reflux, etc.) by reducing their frequency and severity, and has a positive effect on overall well-being, proving its efficacy for the management of GERD.

Background

To examine the gastrointestinal (GI) effectiveness (including the duration and frequency of symptoms and its impact on quality of life) of Omeprazole (Proton pump inhibitor) in patients diagnosed with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).

Method

This study registered 180 patients (aged 25 to 65 years) with GERD. They were randomly assigned to either the Omeprazole group (patients given oral Omeprazole 20 mg) or the placebo group over 4 weeks. A thorough examination of the patient's baseline characteristics (age, gender, body mass index, smoking, comorbidities and eating habits) was done. To ensure safety and tolerability, vital signs and adverse events were monitored every day.

Result

Omeprazole provided rapid relief in GERD symptoms as it significantly lowered the mean duration of symptoms (5.2 ± 1.3 days) compared to the control group (7.8 ± 1.5 days). An outstanding decrease in the frequency of symptoms (92% vs. 65%) and their severity was also noted in the omeprazole group (Table 1).

The GERD-QOL scores revealed considerably improved Health-related QoL associated with the use of Omeprazole orally.

Conclusion

This study supports the GI efficacy of Omeprazole in the management of GERD symptoms.
