In males having isolated closed femoral shaft fractures, systemic ozone therapy utilized as an adjunct to the standard therapeutic regimen for a femoral shaft fracture produces a positive impact on intensity and quality of bone repair, resulting in substantial alterations in bone mineral density, an increased total RUST score, and expedite bone remodeling. 

Background

A pilot trial aimed to explore the dynamics of bone turnover markers at various stages of closed femoral shaft fracture consolidation in individuals undergoing systemic ozone treatment. 

Method

Overall, 20 male patients (group 2, 47.8 ± 3.5 years) having a femoral shaft fracture (AO/ASIF 32А, 32В) were recruited in this study. The control arm (group 1, 46.8 ± 3.7 years) consisted of 10 healthy men. The Subgroup 2a (n= 10) were treated with standard treatment; subgroup 2b (n = 10) was treated with standard treatment complemented by minor autohemotherapy at ozone concentrations (20 mg/L).

The fracture consolidation was determined on the RUST scale and blood levels of С-terminal telopeptides of type I collagen (pg/ml) and procollagen type I carboxy-terminal propeptide (ng/ml) were estimated on days 7, 30, and 90.

Result

The total RUST score in subgroups 2a and 2b on days 7, 30, and 90 are shown in the below table. The bone mineral density was as elevated as 90% in the minor autohemotherapy subgroup when compared to 78% in subgroup 2а, depicting an accelerated bone healing.

On the 30th day, the levels of blood levels of С-terminal telopeptides of type I collagen in subgroup 2b were higher compared to subgroup 2a. On the 7th day, the procollagen type I carboxy-terminal propeptide was considerably raised in subgroup 2b when compared to subgroup 2a. The levels were found to peak on days 90 and 30.


Conclusion

Minor autohemotherapy produces a favorable impact on the quality and intensity of bone healing.
