Key take away

The study comparing effects of KT (Kinesio taping) with ESWT (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy) added to an exercise program in knee OA patients demonstrated that both KT and ESWT have similar effects when compared to controls in terms of diminishing pain, improving knee function and strength.

Background

The randomized controlled trial aimed to compare the effects of two different treatment modalities (KT and ESWT) added to a home-exercise program on pain, strength, and function in knee OA patients.

Method

Between January 2015 and June 2016, the study was conducted and recruited 60 voluntary female subjects. The mean age was 58.8 ± 6.2 years. Participants were randomly allocated to KT (n = 22), ESWT (n = 18) and control (n = 20) groups. For 6 weeks, KT and ESWT were applied. All the groups underwent a home exercise program for 12 weeks.

The outcomes measured were VAS (Visual Analog Scale) for pain assessment (during squat, rest and sleep), Isokinetic strength for quadriceps and hamstring strength, ‘The Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Survey’, Timed Up & Go and 10 m Walk tests for function. At baseline, 6th and 12th weeks, the assessments were carried out.

Result

Significant improvements were witnessed in all groups in all tests. No difference was found between groups except pain levels during sleep. The control group illustrated a considerable reduction in pain during sleep in comparison with the ESWT group as depicted in the following table:

Conclusion

In patients with knee OA, the addition of ESWT and KT treatments to a home exercise program didn’t make any difference compared to controls on pain reduction, knee strength, and functional level improvements.
