Key take away

In individuals diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment and insomnia, an 8-week mindfulness therapy led to improvements in mental state, quality of sleep, and overall cognitive performance.

Background

The goal of a double-blind randomized controlled study was to assess the effects of mindfulness intervention on emotional state, cognition, and sleep quality of individuals who were experiencing insomnia along with cognitive decline.

Method

A total of 75 patients who fulfilled the eligibility requirements were randomly allocated to the health education (n = 37) or mindfulness (n = 38) therapy groups. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment and Mini-Mental State Examination were used to test cognition, while the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Inventory was used to evaluate sleep. Perceived stress, anxiety, depression, and Insomnia Severity Index perceived stress were the secondary endpoints ascertained. EEG signals were gathered in the mindfulness state when subjects were relaxed with their eyes closed. These data were used to examine the power spectrum.

Result

The mindfulness group showed a substantial improvement in both quality of sleep and cognitive function. In comparison to the control group, perceived stress and anxiety ratings were considerably lower in the mindfulness group. Significant power spectrum differences existed between the mindfulness and rest states. Good safety with no fatalities or major adverse effects was reported.

Conclusion

Mental health, cognitive abilities, and sleep quality were improved by mindfulness. It triggered favorable alterations in electrical frequency bands related to cognition and attention and also promoted deep relaxation in the brain.
