Key take away

Women having fibromyalgia syndrome experience considerable sexual dysfunction and other related sexual difficulties, like a rise in sexual pain and reduced sexual satisfaction or sexual desire.

Background

A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to assess sexual dysfunction in females diagnosed with fibromyalgia syndrome.

Method

With the aid of Web of Science, SciELO, PubMed Medline, Scopus, CINAHL, and PsycINFO PROQUEST, a literature search was carried out. The study incorporated observational studies with two groups (healthy controls, females with fibromyalgia syndrome) that assessed sexual function. Utilizing cohen's standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval in the random-effects model, the pooled effect was estimated.

Result

Overall, 12 studies and 1367 females (601 healthy controls, 766 people with fibromyalgia syndrome) were incorporated. In females suffering from fibromyalgia syndrome, a major sexual dysfunction was noted (SMD = 1.72). Furthermore, sexual satisfaction (SMD = -2.09) and pain during sexual relations (SMD = -1.97) were the secondary endpoints that were more affected in females having fibromyalgia syndrome.

Conclusion

Compared with healthy females, females having fibromyalgia syndrome showed major sexual dysfunction and other associated sexual difficulties.
