Key take away

Online modified oropharyngeal exercises markedly reduce daytime sleepiness and improve simple snoring, sleep quality, anxiety, depression, and quality of life issues.

Background

Simple snoring often goes untreated due to a lack of awareness but can impact quality of life and strain relationships. A study investigated whether online oropharyngeal exercises could offer relief.

Method

In this double-blinded, randomized controlled trial, 66 participants were randomly divided into two groups (33 participants in each group). The control group was given health education on snoring, while the intervention group was given both health education and modified oropharyngeal exercises over 4 weeks. The key endpoints were snoring quantity, loudness, and index. Secondary endpoints included quality of sleep, depression, self-reported snoring, quality of life, daytime sleepiness, and anxiety. Estimation of endpoints was done at baseline, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks.

Result

The group receiving both health education and modified oropharyngeal exercises showed significant improvements in snoring quantity, loudness, and index, (p < .001), as well as enhancements in quality of sleep, anxiety, depression, overall quality of life, and daytime sleepiness. Self-reported snoring also dropped after 8 weeks.

Conclusion

Online modified oropharyngeal exercises effectively reduced simple snoring and improved sleep quality and emotional well-being, making them a promising option for those affected.
