Key take away

In comparison to 2% Minoxidil solution, the ENERGI-F701 solution is more effective in treating female pattern hair loss without causing initial hair shedding.

Background

In a double-blind, head-to-head, multi-center, parallel phase II trial, the efficacy and safety of ENERGI-F701 solution for female pattern hair loss (FPHL) were evaluated in comparison to a 2% Minoxidil solution.

Method

Healthy females (>20 years of age) suffering from FPHL and experiencing hair loss of over 100 hair per day, met the inclusion criteria. Screening of 83 females with hair loss was done and 67 of them were recruited in the study. Randomly, the volunteers were assigned to apply either ENERGI-F701 or 2% Minoxidil solution to the affected scalp.

Efficacy outcomes assessed at week 12 incorporated alterations in hair loss count after instructed combing, investigator photographic assessment questionnaire scores, all-day shed hair count, hair density and thickness, and quality of life.

Result

The ENERGI-F701 group demonstrated a significant increase in hair density from 80.8 to 92.9 hair/cm², while the 2% Minoxidil solution group elevated from 90.1 to 101.9 hairs/cm² at week 12. Additionally, the ENERGI-F701 group exhibited notable reductions in all-day shed hair count at week 4 (-149.0 ± 264.60) and week 6 (-161.3 ± 282.56), compared to the 2% minoxidil solution group (-60.9 ± 201.60 and -91.9 ± 222.60, respectively).

Furthermore, the ENERGI-F701 group experienced a lower percentage of local skin reactions (5.9%) compared to the 2% Minoxidil solution group (21.2%). At week 16, the ENERGI-F701 group displayed greater increases in hair thickness (+3.9 versus +3.8 μm), mean hair density (11.7 ± 15.71 versus 8.3 ± 15.09 hairs/cm²), and better scores in the female hair loss quality of life questionnaire and the investigator photographic assessment questionnaire.

Conclusion

ENERGI-F701 solution is a better option for FPHL management when compared to 2% Minoxidil solution.
