Key take away

Articaine, the most commonly utilized dental amide-type local anesthetic proven to be safe with superior anesthesia efficacy, rapid onset and pain relief, making it a valuable choice for dental pulp diseases in children.

Background

This randomized clinical study investigated Articaine, as an effective pain relief option in children undergoing endodontic procedures.

Method

Overall, 98 pediatric patients who received endodontic painless therapy were randomly separated into the control group (those who received Lidocaine infiltration anaesthesia) and the observation group (those who received Articaine infiltration anaesthesia). Each group comprised of 49 children.

A comparison of the anaesthetic effect, onset time of anaesthesia, sensory recovery, anaesthetic interval, pain, vital signs and adverse events was noted.

Result

Compared to the control group, the anaesthetic effect in the observation group was greater- shorter anaesthesia onset time and sensory recovery; longer duration of anaesthesia and; lower visual analogue scale score and facial expression scales. Also, lower heart rate and higher diastolic blood pressure (BP) were observed. Children in the observation group had fewer adverse events compared to the ones in the control group.

Conclusion

Compared to Lidocaine, Articaine has a better anaesthesia effect provides rapid onset of anaesthesia and has less impact on the BP and heart rate, along with pain relief and good safety in the treatment of dental pulp diseases in paediatrics.
