Key take away

A recent study demonstrated that the orthotic treatment for posterior tibial tendon dysfunction stages I and II (flat foot) is effective in relieving the pain. Orthotic treatment can be used for decreasing pain in patients with flat foot. However, more research is required for high-intensity monitored exercise programmes and individualized orthotic treatment.

Background

This study was done to find if the orthotic treatment is efficient in treating flat foot.

Method

In this study, patients who were treated with orthotic treatments after getting diagnosed with flat foot in the early stage were chosen. The results examined were any symptom associated with flat foot. They were evaluated with the help of Cochrane collaboration risk of bias tool.

Result

The study included 186 subjects and four randomized controlled trials articles. Three distinct forms of traditional therapy were used in the studies: footwear, stretching /strengthening exercises and foot/ankle-foot orthoses. Foot orthoses, along with exercise programmes, worked to progress the outcomes of orthotic treatment.

Conclusion

It was concluded that the orthotic treatment helped in lowering the pain in the early stages of flat foot.
