What's new?

The post-operative recovery of talus fracture depends on several factors like the type of fracture, quality of fracture reduction and occurrence of osteoarthritis.

According to the scientists of the University of Leuven Belgium, type of fracture, quality of fracture reduction and occurrence of osteoarthritis postoperatively were the significant factors that influence the recovery of talus fracture after the treatment.

Talus is the principal articular structure that connects foot and leg. Due to susceptible to heavy loads, talus is prone to fractures. Controversies are there with regards to the favoured treatment approach to manage talus fractures. This retrospective study intended to estimate long-term results after talus fractures operative management, factors that influence outcomes and approaches to improve that results. A total of 84 patients with  9.1 years of follow up were selected for the study. The study comprised the numeric rating scale, Short Form-36 Health Survey and Foot Function Index-5pt to measure the restoration of daily activities, general health status and functional results. A correlation analysis was also conducted between 14 demographic, clinical, and radiologic variables and outcomes.

The mean numeric rating scale, disability and Foot Function Index pain scores noticed postoperatively were 3.2, 28.7 and 28.7, respectively. The Short Form-36 and low physical, but good mental scores were noted as 48.3 and 42.7, respectively. However, 27 responders out of 66 did not return to their daily activities. The complication rate recorded 56%. The articular incongruence, talus body fractures and osteoarthritis showed poor functional outcomes. Better outcomes were noticed during the delayed surgery after trauma. Efforts should be made to recover articular congruence to enhance outcomes as the quality of fracture reduction is modifiable. The physical health, ankle and hindfoot found to be associated with the significant long-term impacts. Talus fractures should be treated after recovery of the soft-tissues instead viewed as operative emergencies.
