Complete dentures (CDs) and removable partial dentures (RPDs) can reduce the quality of life in its wearers in spite of being rehabilitated.

As per a study issued in The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, the use of dental prostheses like CDs and RPDs can negatively affect oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and masticatory efficiency. In this cross-sectional mapping study, the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) questionnaire and the jaw function limitation (JFL) scale were used to compare the quality of life in patients with CD and RPD vs. patients with natural teeth.

ViewGum software was used for objective colorimetric analysis. Masticatory efficiency was examined via subjective two-colored chewing gum and shape index. Both denture groups presented a dwindling effect on the OHRQoL. People who wore dentures had higher JFL. Control and RPD groups offered better masticatory efficiency compared to those who wore CDs.

Better masticatory efficiency was found for the control group than the denture groups as per the colorimetric analysis. The use of RPDs can help predict lessened JFL and OHRQoL, and CDs use can help predict lessened JFL and masticatory efficacy.
