What's new?

Serotonergic drugs, anxiolytics, and tricyclic antidepressants are beneficial for symptomatic relief of functional dyspepsia.

In a recent study, the most effective treatment options for functional dyspepsia were found to be serotonergic drugs, tricyclic antidepressants, and anxiolytics. The researchers' aim was to examine the use of serotonergic drugs to relieve functional dyspepsia. In the PubMed database, a horizontal review was performed. The articles were selected using PRISMA methodology, along with the keywords "serotonin" and "functional dyspepsia treatment".

A total of 180 studies were initially identified, but after excluding articles based on titles, abstracts, non-English languages, and those focused on pathophysiology, only 16 studies were incorporated. Among the treatment options, prokinetic agents such as 5-HT4 antagonists Cisapride and Tegaserod demonstrated symptom reduction in functional dyspepsia subjects when compared to placebos. However, the effectiveness of Mosapride remains a subject of considerable debate.

Considering antidepressants, tricyclics were found to be efficient in treating functional dyspepsia, particularly Amitriptyline for individuals with epigastric pain syndrome. In people with functional dyspepsia and weight loss, Mirtazapine demonstrated noticeable advantages over placebo. Conversely, serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors were found to be ineffective in treating functional dyspepsia, with the added drawback of causing various adverse effects.

Anxiety-relieving medications like Buspirone and Tandospirone, known for their ability to relax the gastric fundus, illustrated effectiveness in combating functional dyspepsia, offering a potential therapeutic option. Tricyclic antidepressants and anxiolytics have been identified as the most effective treatment options for functional dyspepsia, emphasizing their relevance in addressing this gastrointestinal disorder. The significance of serotonin in both the treatment of functional dyspepsia and its underlying pathophysiology is evident.
