Silicone-based gel can effectively decrease radiotherapy-induced dermatitis

The silicone-based gel is beneficial to alleviate radiotherapy-stimulated dermatitis in breast cancer patients.

In comparison with the control group, the silicone-based gel group exhibited a prophylactic effect and reduction in the rate of radiation-elicited dermatitis in women having breast cancer, according to the findings of a single-center randomized controlled trial. Shapour Omidvari et al. undertook this study to explore the effect of silicone-based gel to prevent radiation-triggered dermatitis in 100 females with breast cancer who had undergone quadrantectomy.

The recruited participants were treated with either silicone-based gel or the best supportive care during radiotherapy. Estimation of dermatitis area and grade of dermatitis was done. In terms of the mean size of the maximum area of radiation-triggered dermatitis, profound differences were witnessed between the study groups, as shown in Table 1:

During radiation therapy, except in the 4th week, the control group exhibited considerably more severe dermatitis. Thus, a silicone-based gel is useful for the management of radiotherapy-induced dermatitis.
