Dental caries can be effectively treated with the help of periodontal anesthesia i.e. 4% articaine plus epinephrine 1:200 000.

Based on the outcomes of a recent study in Stomatologiia journal, the use of altered periodontal anesthesia was found to be effective for the treatment of dental caries without any adverse effects.

To determine the effectiveness of periodontal anesthesia techniques, 78 patients aged from 25-56 years with no serious somatic pathology, who required dental caries treatment were recruited for this study.

Anesthesia methods included intraligamental and altered periodontal anesthesia via a 4% articaine solution along with varied concentrations of vasoconstrictor (epinephrine). The criteria for forecasting the safety and efficacy of the scheduled anesthesia were based on the local injection anesthesia evaluating the functional factors of the tooth pulp like microcirculation and electrical excitability.

Altered periodontal anesthesia with 4% articaine with epinephrine 1:200 000 was easy to use without any specialized equipment with confirmed high safety and efficacy. Thus, modified periodontal anesthesia is effective and safe to treat dental caries.
