Probiotics, when given to mothers during pregnancy and for 3 to 6 months after childbirth, may decrease the risk of infant eczema or atopic dermatitis.

A systematic review depicted that probiotics may be feasible for reducing newborn allergies when given prenatally, specifically in children at high risk of allergy development.  Alexander S. Colquitt et al. aimed to assess the influence of prenatal probiotic usage (giving probiotics to mother only) on the development of a wider range of allergic conditions, including both asthma and atopic dermatitis.

Databases such as Embase, CINAHL, and Medline were searched for suitable randomized controlled trials. Studies that evaluated probiotic vs. placebo supplementation in pregnant females and demonstrated allergic disorders in their children were incorporated. Estimation of the risk of bias and study quality was done. Overall, 6 articles (out of 850) were eligible for inclusion.

According to the findings of 2 studies, maternal probiotics exhibited no impact on the outcomes. Another 2 studies revealed that the occurrence of atopic dermatitis and eczema was decreased by maternal probiotics. No influence on the overall occurrence of atopic sensitisation was seen. However, a decrease in the subgroup of offsprings at high hereditary risk of allergic disorder was observed. Additionally, 1 study discovered no impact in an intention to treat assessment. 

However, there was a decrease in atopic dermatitis in the overall case analysis. Hence, the administration of probiotics to pregnant females may lower the occurrence of allergic conditions in their offsprings. Further larger-scale studies are needed to offer a more conclusive answer.
