H. pylori eradication relieves oxidative stress in people with functional dyspepsia

In patients suffering from functional dyspepsia, eradication of H. pylori restores the required hemostatic balance and reduces oxidative stress.

A prospective observational study depicted that the balance of thiols and disulfides in the cell's redox system was shifted towards disulfide by the inflammation triggered by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). The hemostatic balance was restored by H. pylori elimination therapy, which improved oxidative stress. The goal of the study was to examine the levels of thiol and disulphide in 320 patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia who tested positive for H. pylori and to evaluate how these levels alter in response to elimination therapy.

The patient's blood was first taken to measure the serum thiol and disulphide levels. All patients had an endoscopic biopsy, and the biopsy specimens were analysed pathologically. Therapy for H. pylori eradication was given to patients who tested positive. These individuals' serum thiol and disulphide levels were assessed after taking a blood sample from them for the second time. Prior to and post-therapy, the thiol-disulfide levels of the patients who had H. pylori eradication were compared with those who did not.

In H. pylori-positive patients who responded to the H. pylori elimination therapy, the mean plasma disulphide level considerably reduced from 14.0 ± 6.6 to 10.9 ± 5.9 μmol/L. On the other hand, in H. pylori-positive patients who did not respond to the H. pylori eradication treatment, there was an insignificant rise in the mean serum thiol level (341.4 ± 30.5 vs. 342.6 ± 29.8 μmol/L) and an insignificant reduction in the mean serum disulphide level (15.2 ± 2.5 vs. 14.8 ± 2.3 μmol/L).

The H. pylori-induced inflammation changed the thiol- disulphide balance in the cell's redox system in direction of disulphide. Thus, the eradication therapy's restoration of the desired hemostatic equilibrium relieved the organism from oxidative stress.
