For managing mild-to-moderate SARS-CoV-2 infection, a fixed ayurvedic regimen can be a safe and effective add-on ayurvedic regimen to conventional therapy.

In a study published in The Journal of Pharmacy and Bioallied Sciences, people administered fixed ayurvedic regimen (FAR) as an add-on to the standard of care (SOC)/conventional therapy recovered faster and earlier than those people given SOC only, as evaluated by the minimized number of days needed for recovery from the randomization day and also from the time of commencement of symptoms of coronavirus infection.

Arun Gupta et al. undertook this study to examine the safety and efficacy of a FAR as an add-on to conventional therapy/SOC to manage SARS-CoV-2 infection. In this prospective, randomized, controlled, open-label, blinded end point (PROBE) study, 68 participants were enrolled who consumed either FAR + SOC (35 people) or SOC only (33 people) for 28 days. The mean time needed for clinical recovery and the percentage of people demonstrating clinical recovery between the groups were the major endpoints.

The mean time needed for testing covid negative, alteration in clinical status, number of days of hospitalization, alteration in disease advancement and need of oxygen/intensive care unit admission/rescue medication/ventilator support, health status, and safety based on the incidence of noxious events and alteration in lab parameters were the secondary endpoints.

Table 1 shows average number of days needed for recovery from the randomization day and from the day of symptoms appearance. In comparison with the SOC group, people consuming FAR as an add-on SOC demonstrated prompt recovery from the day of emergence of symptoms by 51.34% and 63.45% faster from randomization day.


A greater percentage of people taking FAR recovered within the initial two weeks than people taking only SOC. As found, 5 times more participants recovered within seven days in the FAR group than the SOC group. An earlier recovery was noted in the symptoms like myalgia, cough, sore throat, and loss of taste. Also, an improvement in post clinical symptoms like anxiety, appetite, stress, and digestion was found to be better with the usage of FAR.

The FAR group exhibited a drop in the need of rescue medicines like antibiotics, antipyretics, and analgesics and a considerable improvement in all the evaluated domains of quality of life. None of the reported adverse events or severe adverse events was linked with the study drugs.  Additionally, FAR did not produce any substantial alteration in the lab safety parameters and was reported to be safe.

Thus, FAR as an add-on to conventional therapy seems to be an effective and safe remedy for tackling the menace of coronavirus pandemic.
