In patients with musculoskeletal disorders, etofenamate can effectively reduce pain and inflammation.

The findings of a systematic review portrayed etofenamate (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, NSAID) to be an effective therapy choice to manage musculoskeletal disorders like osteoarthrosis, blunt traumas, or lumbago. Researchers aimed to explore the available evidence on the safety and efficacy of the topical formulations of etofenamate in people suffering from musculoskeletal disorders.

Databases such as PubMed and Web of Science were explored to find the relevant studies of etofenamate. Notably, 12 studies were included. It was observed that in people having musculoskeletal disorders, including rheumatic diseases and blunt injuries, the administration of topical etofenamate [either in cream (10%), gel (5 or 10%), or lotion (10%) formulations)] helps to mitigate pain and inflammation.

The overall efficacy of etofenamate was superior as compared with other NSAIDs like diclofenac (1%) and indomethacin (1%). Also, etofenamate was found to be as effective as topical formulations of  ketorolac gel (2%) and ketoprofen gel (2.5%) (though ketorolac illustrated better pain improvement at some time points).

As per the clinical evidence, etofenamate has good tolerability in these indications. But, larger studies evaluating etofenamate's efficacy and safety with other novel topical NSAIDs are warranted.
