What's new?

The use of nasal decongestant in the early postoperative period should be encouraged as it significantly improves postsurgical symptoms in patients after septoplasty.

According to a recent study published in International Forum of Allergy and Rhinology”, the nasal decongestant sprays provide significant relief from symptoms like postsurgical bleeding, and nasal crusting occurs after septoplasty.

Septoplasty is a procedure to repair deviated septum for better airflow. Elif Dağli and colleagues conducted a double-blinded, prospective, randomized clinical trial to determine the effect of the use of nasal decongestant in the early postoperative period after septoplasty. In this study, the included patients were randomly divided into two groups. One group received saline irrigation along with oxymetazoline hydrochloride 0.05% nasal spray and other group received only saline irrigation. The pain, nasal crusting and bleeding were assessed through visual analog (VAS) score. Rhinomanometric measurements and NOSE scores were also recorded.

The saline + oxymetazoline group showed significant lesser VAS scores for nasal crusting and bleeding as compared to the saline group. However, VAS scores for pain among both groups were the same. Also, the saline + oxymetazoline group exhibited lower NOSE scores and nasal resistance after surgery.
