What's new?

In patients with non-carious lesions, the combination of two desensitizing protocols was found to minimize dentin hypersensitivity effectively.

According to the findings of a study published in Clinical Oral Investigations, the combination of therapies  (photobiomodulation + toothpaste with 8% strontium acetate) was more effective in controlling dentin hypersensitivity in non-carious lesions compared to the isolated use of the strategies.

Investigators undertook a randomized, double-blind clinical trial to explore the effect of a combination of photobiomodulation and 8% strontium acetate to treat dentin hypersensitivity in non-carious lesions and assessed the risk factors with the quality of life of patients.

Overall, 80 teeth with dentin hypersensitivity were randomized into 4 groups (n = 20): (i) G1, photobiomodulation imitation + toothpaste with no active ingredient; (ii) G2, photobiomodulation imitation + toothpaste with 8% strontium acetate; (iii) G3, photobiomodulation + toothpaste without the active ingredient; and (iv) G4, photobiomodulation + toothpaste with 8% strontium acetate.

For determining the impact of desensitizing therapy on health-related quality of life, the recruited subjects were given a questionnaire on the experience of dentin hypersensitivity. For inter and intra-group comparisons, Friedman and Kruskal-Wallis tests were utilized. For assessing the quality of life, Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests were used. All the analyses used significance levels of about 5%.

The intergroup comparisons displayed a profound difference. Regarding the decline in dentin hypersensitivity, G4 had the best response in terms of dentin hypersensitivity decline when compared to other treatment groups on the seventh day of evaluation. Only G4 demonstrated substantial differences in the decline of experience of dentin hypersensitivity for intragroup analysis.
