What's new?

In individuals having temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, the combination of arthrocentesis and hyaluronic acid (HA) injection was found to considerably improve pain and maximum mouth opening.

Double-needle arthrocentesis plus HA viscosupplementation substantially improves perceived pain and maximum mouth opening in people suffering from unilateral disc displacement without reduction (DdwoR), revealed a study published in Clinics. Rafael Rossini et al. undertook this analytical, retrospective, cross-sectional assessment to explore the efficacy of the combo of arthrocentesis and HA injection in individuals having TMJ pain.

In this study, 72 people of both genders with unilateral DdwoR were clinically and radiologically assessed.  The collection of the following data was done at baseline (prior to arthrocentesis) and at 7, 14, 30, 60, 90, and 180 days following the procedure (final assessment): maximum mouth opening, age, gender, pain, duration of pain, and patient pain perception on a visual analog scale. For the indicated joints, the arthrocentesis was carried out only once.

Between the baseline and final assessment , a considerable decline in pain and restoration of articular function, and a substantial rise in maximum mouth opening were witnessed, as illustrated in Table 1:

Thus, a combination of HA and arthrocentesis is a valuable approach to alleviate TMJ pain in the mid-term follow-up periods.
