What's new?

In women with primary dysmenorrhoea, Vitamin E is beneficial in alleviating pain.

A randomized placebo-controlled trial depicted that Vitamin E is effective in managing dysmenorrhea and can serve as a cost-effective alternative to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and combined contraceptive pills, with fewer associated side effects. Investigators sought to assess the usefulness of Vitamin E in treating dysmenorrhea in comparison to a placebo.

Out of the 1000 women, 60 women between the ages of 17 and 25, who were experiencing dysmenorrhea, were selected for this study. Among them, 30 women were administered 200 units of Vitamin E (two tablets everyday), while the remaining 30 received placebo tablets (two tablets everyday). The treatment commenced two days prior to the onset of menstruation and continued for the initial three days of the menstrual cycle.

The study assessed the pain severity and duration before and after the treatment for both groups, which were followed over 3 consecutive menstrual cycles. The volunteers had a mean age of 22.6 years. A noteworthy distinction was evident when comparing pain severity and duration before and after treatment within the Vitamin E group. Additionally, a significant difference was witnessed between the study groups when comparing the mean of pain severity and duration.

The use of Vitamin E in alleviating pain associated with primary dysmenorrhea is effective and offers a more easier approach with fewer side effects. Moreover, its cost-effectiveness makes it viable as a universal treatment for dysmenorrhea.
