What's new?

In people having chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, the use of biologics is associated with a decrease in polyp size, and improvement in quality of life and sense of smell.

A systematic review and meta-analysis issued in "Rhinology" illustrated that biologics can effectively reduce the size of the polyp, improve quality of life, and boost the sense of smell in people having chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). Researchers sought to examine the efficacy of biologics for CRSwNP management. Major endpoints were illness extent, objective illness severity, and illness-specific quality of life, with endpoints estimated at several end-of-treatment time points in distinct studies (range 16-52 weeks).

Overall, 2035 subjects were enrolled in 11 trials. Ten studies stated alterations in polyp size, with the treatment group's decrease being estimated at -1.25. Lund-Mackay score decrease was observed in 6 trials, with a pooled mean difference of -4.90. Peak nasal inspiratory flow was incorporated in 5 investigations, having a pooled mean difference of 33.54, and thus suggesting better nasal airflow.

With a pooled effect of 6.56 across 7 trials, improvement in olfaction was noted. In 9 trials, the Sino-nasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) score resulted in a pooled effect of -14.53, which indicated an improvement in quality of life. Hence, biologics can be promising in treating nasal polyps in chronic rhinosinusitis-affected people. The results for individual biologics showed great heterogeneity, which emphasizes the need for more research.
