Physicians to encourage teenagers to follow an active lifestyle as cell phone use found to increase cervical instability in neck pain patients.

According to a report published in the “China Journal of Orthopaedics and Traumatology”, the adolescents with neck pain who spend more time using a cell phone found to have a higher occurrence rate of cervical instability on C₃-C₄, C₄-C₅, C₅-C₆ segments than the healthy teenagers.

This report aimed to assess the association between cervical instability and living habit of adolescent patients with neck pain. A total of 17 healthy and 59 adolescents with neck pain were selected and categorized into two groups; control and neck pain group, respectively. The living habits of all participants were recorded. The association between cervical instability and living habit was determined using the hyperextension, hyperflexion, and lateral radiography.

Both groups were identical in height, body mass index, weight and age of patients. The control group had more exercise time and less cell phone time per day as compared to the neck pain group. Neck pain group presented a higher prevalence of instability than the control group. The neck pain group also showed higher angular displacement (AD) of hyperflexion in the vertebral body between C₃-C₄, C₄-C₅ and C₅-C₆ than the control group. The AD of hyperflexion of the neck pain group was noticed to be higher than that of hyperextension on C₄-C₅(P<0.01), and AD of hyperextension is larger than that of hyperflexion on C₆-C₇. The AD of hyperextension on C₄-C₅ of patients with neck pain showed a positive association with time of using cellphone every day, but negatively linked with the time of using a computer every day. The AD of hyperflexion was also positively related to the time of using cellphone but was negatively correlated with exercise time.  As per the findings, higher the cellphone usage per day, greater C4-C5 AD values, longer daily exercise time, the smaller C₄-C₅ and C₅-C₆ AD values.
