Repetitive multiple cranial nerve blocks can be used as a preventive treatment for chronic migraine. Moreover, it shows minor post block complications.

As per a recent single-centre prospective cohort study, the repetitive multiple cranial nerve blocks (MCNBs) can effectively prevent chronic migraine. Greater occipital nerve (GON) blocks have been used for the acute and transitional treatment of migraine but its efficacy for prevention of migraine was not studied before.

In this study, the demographic and outcome data on chronic migraine patients who had MCNBs in the headache service between June 2017 and March 2019 was collected.

The measured outcomes were Headache Impact Test 6 (HIT6), reduction in headache days and patient-reported effectiveness MCNBs. At 4 weeks, out of 64 patients, 42 responded well to the MCNBs, their headache days reduced by at least 30% post block. Out of 112 (8%) instances of minor post block 9 complications were documented with a total of 501 injections.

With remarkable efficacy, the MCNBs could be used as an alternative preventive treatment for chronic migraine.
