Tech-based Mindfulness reduces OCD symptoms by cultivating present-moment awareness and acceptance, targeting both worry and rumination and providing a flexible, accessible treatment option.

In a fresh look at data from a past study, Lance L. Hawley and colleagues explored how an 8-week technology-supported mindfulness (TSM) treatment impacts obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms, rumination and worry as compared to a waitlist control.

A total of 71 OCD participants were stratified into two groups: one group received the 8-week TSM treatment on a routine basis, and the other group was on control. The study measured rumination and worry at both the beginning and end of treatment with the ruminative response scale and Penn State worry questionnaire to assess their influence on OCD symptoms over time.Compared to the control group, people in the TSM group encountered substantial reductions in both rumination and worry. Specifically, the reduction in worry were linked to a relief in OCD symptoms.

The study emphasized that TSM effectively reduces rumination and worry in individuals with OCD. Notably, reducing worry was a key predictor of improvement in OCD symptoms.
