Key take away

The 2% zinc citrate toothpaste offers lasting benefits for gingival health while reducing bacteria linked to gingivitis in dental plaque.

Background

Gingivitis, the initial stage of periodontitis, is a widespread oral health concern that can eventually lead to tooth loss. Zinc citrate has been identified as a promising ingredient for enhancing oral health, especially in managing gingivitis. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the impact of 2% zinc citrate toothpaste on gum health and the levels of 3 key bacteria linked to both periodontitis and gingivitis.

Method

In this randomized double‐blind study, 11 volunteers with similar oral health status were segregated into 2 groups:

  • Treatment group (n=5): Used fluoride toothpaste with 2% zinc citrate
  • Control group (n=6): Used fluoride toothpaste only

Measurements of plaque, gingival, and bleeding indices were taken at baseline, 3 weeks, and 3 months. Dental plaque samples were collected for bacterial analysis via quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). This was done to assess the levels of Tannerella forsythia, Porphyromonas gingivali, and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans.

Result

Fluoride toothpaste formulated with 2% zinc citrate markedly reduced both the gingival index and gum bleeding, while showing no effect on the plaque index. Over the long term, it markedly diminished the abundance of 3 key bacteria linked to gingivitis and periodontitis in dental plaque.

Conclusion

The use of toothpaste containing 2% zinc citrate was associated with persistent improvement in gingival health and reduction in the presence of gingivitis‐linked bacteria in dental plaque, without affecting the plaque index.
