Key take away

Supplementation with Vitamin D boosts the therapeutic efficacy of Mometasone nasal spray for allergic rhinitis and is thus suggested as an adjuvant therapy to relieve moderate and severe allergic rhinitis.

Background

This study was performed to determine the effectiveness and safety of using Vitamin D supplementation to combat allergic rhinitis along with Mometasone.

Method

Overall, 140 patients with moderate and severe allergic rhinitis were recruited and randomly assigned to control and experimental groups, each comprising 70 subjects. Both groups received Mometasone nasal spray, while the experimental group additionally received Vitamin D for 4 weeks.

Treatment efficacy was evaluated using the rhinoconjunctivitis quality of life questionnaire (RQLQ) and total nasal symptom scores (TNSS). The analysis included T lymphocyte subsets (cluster of differentiation 3 [CD3+], CD4+, and CD8+), as well as serum levels of anti-inflammatory (interleukin-10 [IL-10]) and proinflammatory (tumor necrosis factor-α [TNF-α], and interferon-γ [IFN-γ]) cytokines. Adverse reactions were also documented.

Result

Allergic rhinitis-affected people initially showed lower serum Vitamin D levels. Following a 4-week treatment period, both groups experienced significant reductions in total RQLQ scores, TNF-α, CD4+/CD8+ ratio, T lymphocyte subsets (CD3+, CD4+), and total TNSS scores, compared to baseline. Additionally, serum Vitamin D, IL-10 levels, IFN-γ and CD8+ substantially elevated. The experimental group demonstrated a substantially higher enhancement in these parameters compared to the control group, except for eye symptoms and sneezing in the RQLQ and TNSS scores.

Conclusion

The incorporation of Vitamin D into Mometasone nasal spray was found to be effective and safe in alleviating symptoms and improving the quality of life for individuals with allergic rhinitis. These favorable results were linked to the regulation of cellular immunity and the suppression of inflammation. Hence, it is strongly advocated to incorporate Vitamin D as adjuvant therapy for individuals battling with moderate to severe allergic rhinitis.
