Key take away

When treating GERD, the combination of Domperidone and Proton Pump Inhibitors is safe and more effective than proton pump inhibitors alone.

Background

To examine the advantages of Domperidone in combination with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials was carried out.

Method

Databases such as ClinicalTrials.gov, WHO's International Clinical Studies Registry Platform, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Scopus, and PubMed were searched for articles contrasting PPI plus Domperidone to PPI monotherapy in terms of symptomatic control of GERD.

Result

Overall, 841 volunteers and 11 trials were included in this meta-analysis (PPI monotherapy group [n = 422] and PPI + Domperidone group [n = 419]). Global GERD symptoms were significantly reduced with the use of Domperidone and PPI combination. The side effects of PPI + Domperidone therapy were comparable to those of PPI monotherapy.

Conclusion

A combination of Domperidone and PPIs has positive results in treating GERD in patients of all ages, including children and adults.
