Key take away

Digital interventions are effective for successfully improving symptoms and well-being in individuals with borderline personality disorder/emotionally unstable personality disorder.

Background

The aim of a systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the effect of digital interventions for individuals exhibiting features of borderline personality disorder (BPD) or emotional unstable personality disorder (EUPD). Digital interventions were explored as potentially valuable therapeutic tools for underserved populations. The research aimed to address a gap in previous reviews by considering the use of digital interventions for subthreshold symptomatology in people with BPD or EUPD features, recognizing the clinical relevance of these conditions.

Method

Searches were carried out across 5 online databases to uncover terminology falling into 3 distinct categories: BPD/EUPD and associated symptoms, mental health interventions, and digital technology. Additionally, 4 relevant journals and 2 trial registers were explored to identify additional papers that met the specified inclusion criteria.

Result

A total of 12 articles fulfilled all the specified inclusion criteria. Meta-analyses unveiled statistically noteworthy variances in symptom assessments between the groups that received interventions and the control groups after the interventions. Furthermore, there were observed declines in BPD/EUPD symptoms and an improvement in well-being from pre-intervention to post-intervention phase.

Service users displayed a high level of engagement, satisfaction, and acceptance of the treatments. These findings underscored the importance of employing digital interventions within BPD/EUPD populations.

Conclusion

Overall, digital therapeutics emerged as promising interventions for effective implementation in BPD/EUPD. These interventions were found to be engaging, satisfying, and acceptable to service users, supporting the potential value of using digital tools for this population.
