In the quest to find neurologic symptoms in pediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome temporally linked with SARS-CoV-2 (PIMS-TS), the children with neurologic symptoms had notably higher markers of systemic inflammation, as revealed from this single-center retrospective observational study. 

Background

This study aimed to describe the neurologic features in PIMS-TS.

Method

A total of 75 children (mean age of 7.9 years) with PIMS-TS were identified. A retrospective review was perfomed to assess the clinical and investigative characteristics together with short-term consequences of children with neurologic symptoms.

Result

Nine children (12%) were found to have neurologic presentations as shown below:

Cranial images abnormalities was observed in 4 children. After 3 months, 4 children had complete recovery, 1 had unilateral paresis, 3 had behavioral changes, and 1 child deceased. Children with neurologic connection had greater systemic inflammatory and prothrombotic markers. These markers were greater in those who did not completely recover at 3 months.

Similar risk factors for PIMS-TS was observed in children with and no neurologic connection.

Conclusion

About 12% patients with PIMS-TS displayed wide neurologic characteristics. Half of these children had full recovery with no neurologic damage at 3 months. Children with neurologic connection and in those who did not recover fully had considerably greater systemic inflammatory markers.
