Key take away

L-Carnitine displays a wide spectrum of potential for various mental and neurological disorders due to its influence on the metabolic mechanisms that underlie the pathophysiology of these diseases.

Background

To analyze L-Carnitine’s (LC) therapeutic potential in nervous system diseases along with much debated mental and neurological conditions.

Method

A comprehensive investigation was driven across PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Ovid Medline, Cochrane, and ClinicalTrials.gov. The search encompassed literature examining the effects of supplementation of Carnitine on neurological or psychiatric illnesses in people up until November 2023 not limited to language or publication date.

Result

Overall, 962 articles remained after excluding the duplicates out of a total of 1479 articles. Further screening identified 60 relevant articles. The number of publications focusing on a particular condition has been mentioned in the following Table 1:

Conclusion

Carnitine supplementation has shown promising therapeutic outcomes in handling diverse health conditions. However, its efficacy seems to be more restricted in conditions like Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), ataxia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, Down syndrome, and sciatic nerve pain.
