Key take away

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) can lead to remarkable improvements in pregnancy outcomes in females receiving in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) therapy.

Background

This systematic review and meta-analysis were performed to determine the efficacy of CBT impact on pregnancy outcomes of females receiving IVF-ET therapy.

Method

Databases such as Embase, MEDLINE, WANFANG, Cochrane Database, and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure were extensively explored. Selection of the eligible studies was done as per the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Extraction of the relevant data was done.

The quality of studies was assessed. For statistically analyzing difference between the control and intervention groups, odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were pooled.

Result

In total, 10 studies were chosen. The CBT and cognitive-linked therapy led to remarkable improvements in the pregnancy rate of females undergoing IVF-ET therapy. The subgroup assessment indicated that people who were given CBT, rather than complex psychological interventions, and people who were given interventions delivered by professional psychologists, exhibited a higher probability of becoming pregnant during IVF-ET therapy.

CBT delivered by expert psychologists considerably enhanced pregnancy rates. On the other hand, self-delivered interventions did not illustrate a profound impact on pregnancy outcomes.

Conclusion

CBT and cognitive-related psychological interventions exhibited a substantial impact on the pregnancy outcomes of females receiving IVF-ET therapy. Instead of complex psychological interventions, CBT treatment offered by professional psychologists is highly recommendable.
