Key take away

This analysis found out that one of the effective approaches to provide instant relief from pain due to patellar tendinopathy is the infrapatellar strap. As an easy-to-use cost-effective measure, it can be recommended to young athletes for physical therapy.

Background

Infrapatellar strapping is an approach utilized in multiple knee treatments; although, its impact on functional performance and pain in the young athletes had not been evaluated prior to this study. Therefore, it was aimed to investigate the effects of infrapatellar strap on jumping performance and pain diagnosed with patellar tendinopathy.

Method

The analysis involved sixteen young male volleyball and basketball athletes. The infrapatellar strap was implemented below the patella, above the patellar tendon. Four jumping tests were conducted; drop jump, jump 30-s test, squat jump, and single-leg jump, either with or without the strap. Visual analog scale and Optojump Next optical measurement system were used to assess Knee Pain severity and jumping performance parameters, respectively.

Result

With the use of infrapatellar strap patients experienced reduced pain in the jumps 30-s test, drop test, and single-leg jump test (p < 0.05). The jumping performance was similar in both with or without the strap.

Conclusion

The infrapatellar strap was efficient in reducing pain without changing the jumping performance. It can be promoted to apply alongwith the physical activity as the part of the physical therapy treatments given for patellar tendinopathy. This is an appropriate approach because of its ease to use, being a non-invasive method and low cost.
