Key take away

During the third trimester of pregnancy, hormonal changes can lead to gingival issues in women, ranging from mild to severe gingivitis. Inadequate oral hygiene due to pregnancy-related symptoms like nausea and vomiting can exacerbate these problems, thus highlighting the importance of preventive dental care.

Background

A study was conducted to investigate the gingival manifestations experienced by expectant mothers in the final trimester of pregnancy.

Method

A bibliographic review was conducted, summarizing the findings from an assessment of 15 chosen articles relevant to the theme. Major digital databases, such as Pubmed and Scielo, were explored for this review.

Result

Expectant mothers may develop varying degrees of gingivitis, primarily as a result of bacterial plaque buildup. This occurs because many pregnant women experience inadequate oral hygiene due to nausea and vomiting, which leads to neglecting their dental care.  As found, delaying treatment can result in the progression of gingival issues, potentially causing harm to the root cement, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone.

Conclusion

Gingival manifestations were frequently observed in pregnant women. These problems were often exacerbated by hormonal changes during pregnancy and inadequate oral hygiene, ultimately leading to the development of mild to severe gingivitis and chronic periodontitis.
