Background

First carpometacarpal (CMC) joint osteoarthritis (OA) is usually found in clinical practice. The selected surgical option when conservative therapy fails varies with the disease's nature and stage. Denervation of the first CMC joint is a comparatively new method for treating thumb CMC joint OA. This analysis concentrates on to review the experience and surgical procedure with first CMC joint denervation surgery.

Method

The individuals who went through first CMC joint denervation surgery from January 2015 to  September 2017 were selected for the analysis. Subjects obtained a joint block at the first CMC joint with 0.25% bupivacaine before the surgical CMC denervation. The participants who had an excellent response to injection were chosen for surgical denervation.  Preoperative and postoperative pain scores along with patient demographics were analysed using the numeric rating scale, and grip strength were assesses by the Jamar Hydraulic Hand Dynamometer. 

Result

A total of eight participants matched the inclusion criteria. Average grip strength and numeric rating scale enhanced considerably after the therapy. Out of eight, seven participants described satisfaction with surgery. Two patients with complications were identified.

Conclusion

First CMC joint denervation exhibited a significant improvement in grip strength and relief from pain among the subjects with thumb CMC joint OA.
