Key take away

From a recent study, it was illustrated that mini dental implant (MDIs) for maxillary overdentures offers significant Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) improvement. A maxillary MDI overdenture treatment provides substantial OHRQoL enhancement when not less than 5 MDIs stay, maintaining functional ease.

Background

This study was done to evaluate the 3-year result of 5-6 MDIs.

Method

In this study, 3-year results of 5-6 MDIs in the maxilla were evaluated. The pain and surgery discomfort after the surgery were evaluated with the help of visual analogue score. OHRQoL was examined by Oral Health Impact Profile-14 before the surgery, after the surgery and post-prosthetic connection, and after three years in utility.

Result

Among 204 placed MDIs, 164 were still in the origin place after three years. The OHIP-14 score does not get affected by the failure of one MDI, but it was affected by multiple losses.

Conclusion

It was concluded that maxillary MDI overdenture treatment is successful in offering notable OHRQoL improvement in cases when at least 5 MDIs last.
