Key take away

In NAFLD patients, Statins can effectively lower liver enzymes and have a positive impact on liver histology.

Background

This systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to explore the efficacy of Statins on biochemical and histological parameters in people suffering from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Method

Databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, and SCOPUS were comprehensively explored for clinical trials and observational studies assessing the effects of Statins on NAFLD onset and management. This search was performed regardless of statin type or dose, the length of treatment, or the techniques used to diagnose NAFLD (imaging or biopsy technique).

Result

Thirteen studies were identified. Tests of liver function and lipid profiles both showed remarkable improvements. Steatosis grade (standardized mean difference, SMD -1.73; I2 = 98%) and NAFLD activity score (SMD -1.09; I2 = 93%) both exhibited substantial decline.

Conclusion

The use of Statins was associated with a reduction in hepatic enzymes and improvement in liver histology in people having NAFLD.
