For treatment of acute irreversible pulpitis, pulpotomy is not inferior to conventional root canal treatment in people with mature permanent teeth.

A systematic review was carried out to see if cervical pulpotomy is a feasible alternative to traditional root canal therapy in order to manage acute irreversible pulpitis in adult permanent teeth.

Only randomized controlled trials that contrasted non-surgical root canal therapy with cervical pulpotomy were incorporated. Studies involving immature permanent teeth or primary teeth were not included. Studies having a minimum follow-up of 6 months and data on clinical and radiographic success rates were considered. The authors collated the data from original sources.

The criteria for inclusion and exclusion were only met by four trials. The findings showed that pulpotomy had a greater radiographic success rate than root canal therapy, whereas, its clinical success rate was equivalent to that of the latter.

When it comes to treating acute irreversible pulpitis in adults with mature permanent teeth, pulpotomy is not less efficient than the standard root canal procedure.
