A systematic review aimed to explore effectiveness of photobiomodulation treatment on pain control in people with temporomandibular joint dysfunction.
As a less invasive, safe, and low-cost therapeutic option for the management of temporomandibular joint disorders, photobiomodulation is a valuable adjuvant.
A systematic review aimed to explore effectiveness of photobiomodulation treatment on pain control in people with temporomandibular joint dysfunction.
Electronic databases such as Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, and PRISMA were searched for relevant literature. For assessing risk of bias, ROBINS-I for non-randomized clinical trials and Rob 2.0 for randomized clinical trials were utilized.
A total of 84 publications were found, and after duplicates were eliminated, 71 studies were added for the titles and abstracts. Notably, 30 papers were selected for full reading, and 24 remained for qualitative analysis according to the eligibility criteria. The studies disclosed low risk of bias. Owing to heterogeneity of studies, the researchers could not perform meta-analysis.
Photobiomodulation is an efficient add-on treatment without adverse effects in people suffering from temporomandibular disorders.
