Key take away

Septoplasty is a surgical technique to correct a deviated septum which allows better airflow through the nose. Lower values of Visual analog scale (VAS) scores and Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) ratings proved the efficacy of nasal decongestant sprays postoperatively.

Background

To assess the impact of nasal decongestant in the early postoperative period following the septoplasty.

Method

Following septoplasty, participants categorised into two classes to obtained either physiologic saline irrigation with Oxymetazoline hydrochloride 0.05% nasal spray (saline+Oxymetazoline group) or physiologic saline irrigation (saline group). The assessment of Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) scores; Visual analogue scale (VAS) scores for bleeding, pain, and nasal crusting; and rhinomanometric measurements were assessed before and after the operation.

Result

The saline+Oxymetazoline group exhibited significantly lower VAS scores for bleeding and nasal crusting as compared to the saline group. Both groups presented similar VAS for pain. The saline+Oxymetazoline group also showed considerably lower total nasal resistance and NOSE scores as compared to the saline group following the surgery.

Conclusion

The nasal decongestant sprays in the very early postoperative period is advantageous to decrease the postsurgical bleeding symptoms and nasal crusting and also for reducing nasal resistance in this edematous period.
