Key take away

For venous thromboembolism prophylaxis after total hip or knee arthroplasty, Apixaban, Edoxaban, Fondaparinux, Rivaroxaban, and Darexaban have superior effectiveness.

Background

This study sought to systematically review the effectiveness of 11 anticoagulants to treat venous thromboembolism (VTE) following total knee or hip arthroplasty.

Method

For studies assessing the effectiveness of various anticoagulants for VTE prevention following total hip or knee surgery, the databases like Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Wanfang Data, VIP, China Biology Medicine, and Embase were explored. In this systematic review and network meta-analysis, 2 reviewers independently screened the literature. Collection of data was done. Confidence in Network Meta-Analysis was used to rank the evidence. Utilizing Stata 16.0 software and R 4.1.0 software, the network meta-analysis was then carried out.

Result

There were 61 articles in all. As found, Apixaban, Edoxaban, Fondaparinux, Rivaroxaban, and Darexaban were the most efficient anticoagulant agents to evade deep vein thrombosis in individuals scheduled to undergo knee or hip surgery. However, no difference in the efficiency of the anticoagulants to prevent pulmonary embolism was noted.

Conclusion

Apixaban, Edoxaban, Fondaparinux, Rivaroxaban, and Darexaban are effective to prevent VTE following knee or hip surgery.
