To analyse the treatment needs and efficacy of treatment provided of adult patients who had dental treatment under general anesthesia (GA).
As per this retrospective chart analysis of treatment need
and dental follow-up care in vulnerable adult patients with general anesthesia (GA), routine annual
recalls could help to elude dental emergencies and failures in patients needing
treatment under GA.
To analyse the treatment needs and efficacy of treatment
provided of adult patients who had dental treatment under general anesthesia
(GA).
A total of 414 at risk and vulnerable patients (aged 18 to
93 years) in need of dental treatment under GA were recruited for this study. Indications for GA, total Decayed, Missing, Filled (DMF) index, and
treatment types, failure rates of treated teeth, dental emergencies and evoked
periods following the use of GA were all considered under outcome variables.
Total patients were divided into 4 groups as:
Out of the total patients, 247 were under GA treatment, generally pwdis (154 patients, 69.7%). Main indication for GA treatment was feeling of pain (178 patients, 72.1%). Pwd had the highest degree of restoration, DMF/T, and most missing teeth; whereas, Pwapd had the most decayed teeth as shown below:
There was a 1 year recall augmented by 2-4 oral hygiene meetings as per compliance. A 4%. failure rate of all treated teeth was detected. Patients with GA described 2 dental emergencies.
A high dental treatment need was observed with the
difference in diagnostic groups mainly concerning the need of a GA, their
DMF/T, treatment requirements and types implemented.
