Key take away

Blended lemon and lavender aromatherapy offer a non-pharmacological option that could enhance comfort and well-being during early pregnancy by preventing episodes of nausea and vomiting.

Background

To determine the efficacy of a mixture of lemon and lavender aromatherapy in preventing nausea and vomiting during pregnancy in the first trimester.

Method

A total of 36 pregnant women in their first trimester presenting with nausea and vomiting participated in this study. They were asked to fill in the identity as well as a nausea and vomiting questionnaire. Thereafter, they were instructed on how to use a lemon and lavender aromatherapy roll-on mixture in the morning and evening for 6 days.

The Pregnancy Unique Quantification of Emesis and Nausea (PUEQ) questionnaire included three questions about the duration, frequency, and intensity of nausea and vomiting, along with one question assessing overall psychological and quality of life.

Result

Lemon and lavender were found to provide symptomatic relief from nausea and vomiting when used during the first trimester of pregnancy. Specifically, 30 participants (83.3%) reported a decrease in nausea and vomiting of mild intensity, while 6 participants (16.7%) reported a decrease in its moderate intensity.

Conclusion

Mixing Lemon and Lavender relieves nausea and vomiting in pregnant females during their first trimester.
